Internets: MIA

Well, here we go again. And I entirely blame Kristy.

Last week, her entire family was sick. That made recording a challenge. We rescheduled for today (Sunday, 1 AUG). Not a problem, right? It wasn't until Time Warner Cable got involved; she's got no internets.

Foiled again!

Cross your fingers... we're going to give it a shot tomorrow for recording our In Depth Discussion of Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind . Yes, the book is a bit longer than our usual. Kind of exactly how long the wait has been for us to talk about this book! You still have time to email your questions to kindlewomen [at] gmail [dot] com.

As for the blog, I'm going to spend the day doing some updates. The biggest update will be a comprehensive lists of the books we've done In Depth Discussions on, books I've discussed, & books Kristy discussed during the course of the show. There will also be a rating notation based on our 3B Scale (buy, borrow, burn) if I can figure out how to upload it. I hope it'll help you (& us) keep track of the books & our recommendations.

The Kindle Women apologize for the long wait between shows. We have no control over the internets... which is pretty sad for me. I'd like to control the internets, actually. That would be fun. But since I don't, we'll have to hope for tomorrow.

The Accidental Experiment

I’ve had my Kindle 2 since May 2009. Since then, I don’t think I’ve read any new book that hasn’t been on my Kindle. I’ve basically shunned “terrestrial books.” I did that on purpose; I spent the money on the Kindle & I wanted to make the most out of my purchase.

Quite awhile ago, I purchased Bernard Cornwell’s Agincourt when it was brand new to hardcover. The cover attracted my attention, so I read the dusk cover & decided to buy it. The sad thing is that I never got around to actually reading the book. Admittedly, it defeats the purpose of buying the book. I put it on a shelf & forgot about it.

When I got my Kindle 2 in May, I stocked it with all sorts of books so I’d never be lonely. As I was shopping the Amazon Kindle Book Store, I stumbled across Bernard Cornwell’s Agincourt for $9.99. It looked interesting (again), so I decided to buy it. Again. I forgot I already had the terrestrial book. Shame on me.

Fast forward to last night. The past two books for the show (The Monster of Florence & upcoming Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks) are very serious fare. In between, I read The Lady in the Tower: The Fall of Anne Boleyn by Alison Weir. This all adds up to me needing a little bit of reading fun. I needed a change. I was about to load up Agincourt & remembered I have the terrestrial version. This led to a Kindle break for me.

Yes, I’m reading a regular book. A paper book. And it’s quite a shock to my system, I can tell you that. I’m going to talk about it on the next show, recording this weekend. But I’m interested now: has anyone else gone back-and-forth between terrestrial books & their eReaders? What was your experience? Let us know for the next show!

Internet Fail #2

Once again, we've got a classic internet fail. Kristy & I were 17 minutes into recording our In Depth discussion of The Monster of Florence. We were making progress... then I lost the Skype connection. I thought it was my internet. But this time, it was Kristy's internet!

At this point, we're planning on finishing & posting the show on Tuesday. With the time zone difference between the two of us, recording during the week can be very challenging. We're going to give it our best shot tomorrow & will get it out to our listeners as soon as we possibly can.

Thanks, once again, for bearing with us. After all, it wouldn't be Kindle Women without internet fail.

I think it's a great intro to the book... it's the video that caught my attention enough to want to cover it as an In Depth book for the show. It's a particularly interesting topic; I still live in Italy (& Kristy has lived here), so I hope our conversation will be enlightening... I can guarantee it will not be "P.C." *is it ever? wink wink*

Tell us what you REALLY think

First of all, I know this video might not fit our page, but I thought it would be good to pass along. As I have no idea about how to write HMTL, it's pretty much a cut/paste job for me.

To the point. After the iPad announcement, Walt Mossberg of All Things Digital spoke with Steve Jobs:
It's upsetting to me that Steve Jobs appears annoyed by Mr. Mossberg's specific questions about how the iPad will function as an eBook reader. He states "You're not going to sit down & read for 10 hours," when speaking to the battery life of the device... which is why he thinks the LED backlit screen will be great for "at night reading." Any eye doctor I've ever seen tells me not to sit in the dark & use my computer without any additional light. Why? Because it's awful for the health of your eyes. Another point here: Steve Jobs points out all books will eventually be the same price. He actually mentions publishers pulling books from Amazon. Considering the events of the past few days, this is an enlightening conversation. I thought about this as I observed the pricing during the iBookstore demonstration & came to the same conclusion as Jobs (though obviously he thought about it waaaay before me).

We'll be chatting more about the Amazaon/Macmillan standoff (or cave in, depending on your point of view) on our upcoming full length show. Internet Fail

Kristy & I recorded a brand new podcast on Sunday. Since then, I have been struggling with my ISP & hosting service to get it uploaded. I have no idea why it's not working. All I can say is that something is broken. So I will continue to try & fix it. I mean, we read Mercury Falls for a reason!

Are You Reading Mercury Falls?

Don't forget! We're recording a new episode of the show next Sunday (the 24th), in which we plan to have an in-depth discussion about our selection this month, Mercury Falls by Robert Kroese. Hopefully he doesn't mind. If we can figure out how it works, we may even broadcast live on UStream. Of course, I still don't have the recording software down just yet, so the whole thing could blow up in my face.

What have we, the Kindle Women, been up to lately? I've begun training for a half-marathon in April in Milan, & Kristy has been attending to family matters. I've also been trying to figure out how to make the web site a bit nicer; that's how we ended up with an Amazon store, actually. It can be pretty dangerous when I get near a computer. Plus, we were watching the developments at CES & now we're waiting to hear from Apple on January 27th. January has been a crazy month for us!

CES Highlights

This week has been an interesting one for fans of eReaders & eBooks. Why? Because CES is happening in Las Vegas right now. This year, eReaders have had their own section of the floor at CES to cover all the new releases.

So what's interesting? There's the Liquavista by Phillips' Research Lab. This has a full color screen using a process called "electrowetting," a nice step away from eInk. It's not especially pretty & won't be released until 2010/2011 (i.e. no word on cost), but it's still a pretty development.

The Skiff is a big development as an eReader. It's got an 11.5" display. It's got the most screen real estate of any eReader on the market. It also has a revolutionary screen made of "metal foil" by LG, making it pretty bendy when the casing is off. It works on Sprint's 3G network, comes with WiFi, & is 100% touchscreen. No word on pricing yet, so it's hard to determine what the cost of this will look like.

My personal favorite: the Plastic Logic Que. Plastic Logic developed the Que for business people, so it's very organization-centric. The screen real estate measures in at 8.5x11, so it's fully paper-sized. It can read PDF, Microsoft Office documents, & can sync to MS Outlook (not compatible with Mac's iCal & Mail, though). Newspapers look great on this thing; the size of the screen helps in this area. It's a full touch screen. Len Edgerly at The Kindle Chronicles got a great interview with Maureen Mellon, senior director of product marketing at Plastic Logic. The big ouch? The price. The WiFi 4GB model will cost $649, the WiFi + 3G with 8GB memory will cost a whopping $799. Not even close to being the least expensive out there, but I would be sucked into it if I traveled a lot for business.
